Set Up Duo During Your First Microsoft 365 Sign-In


If you sign in to a Microsoft 365 service and do not have Microsoft Authenticator or Duo configured, you may be prompted to add a sign-in method before you can continue.

Use the steps below to set up Duo and complete your sign-in.

1. Sign in with your Princeton account. Enter your Princeton netID@princeton.edu and password.

2. Continue through the security setup prompts. When you see the Let's keep your account secure screen, select Next.

3. On the Install Microsoft Authenticator screen, select Other options.

4. From the list of available sign-in methods, select External MFA.

5. On the Set up a sign-in method screen, select Next.

You will be taken to Duo to complete registration.

6. Select Approve with Duo Two-Factor Authentication to complete registration.

7. Register a Duo authentication device

If you have not previously enrolled a Duo device, Duo prompts you to add one.

Choose the option you would like to use, such as:

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete enrollment.

8. Finish the setup

After successfully registering a Duo authentication method, you are returned to Microsoft and see a confirmation message indicating that the sign-in method was added.

Select Done to finish.

What happens next?

After Duo has been configured, future sign-ins are simpler:

  1. Enter your Princeton NetID and password.
  2. When prompted to verify your identity, select Approve with Duo Two-Factor Authentication.
  3. Complete the Duo verification.
  4. Sign in successfully.
