Transferring Your Wireless Number

Transferring Your Wireless Number

Please note that purchasing a mobile device on the University Corporate Account enters you into a 2 year contract with the carrier.  If you choose to cancel or move the line to another carrier before the 2 years is over your department is subject to early termination fees.

Personal Account Corporate Account

If an employee is authorized to carry a mobile device for University business, that device should be managed under one of the University’s wireless corporate accounts.

Princeton has corporate accounts with both Verizon and AT&T.

If an employee has a personal mobile phone number, and wishes to keep that number, it is possible to transfer the number to one of the University corporate accounts.

When transferring a number from a personal account to a corporate account please consider the following:

  • In order for the transfer to be successful, the user must reach out to the carrier and note the account be released to Princeton University.  Please note that the line being transferred cannot be the primary holder of the wireless account.
  • Devices cannot be on any type of phone payment plan, devices must be paid in full prior to transferring the number to the University wireless account.
  • Please keep in mind that final charges for the line transferred will be pro-rated, and based on the day the line is moved.

To begin the transferring process, please fill out the Transfer Request Form.

If you have any questions, please e-mail mobile@princeton.edu. or  609.986.5130

Requests can be processed within 3-5 days.

Corporate Account Personal Account

*Please note:  You will have 30 days from the time your line is released from the corporate account to move your number to a personal plan.  After the 30 days the line/phone number will be cancelled and you will no longer be able to keep the number.

If an employee becomes ineligible for coverage under the University corporate accounts, he/she has the option to transfer the number back to a personal account.  The release of a line must first be approved by a department head.

Below are guidelines for the release of a line from a corporate to personal account:

  • When a number is transferred from corporate to personal, the employee must assume the completion of the one year contract.
  • The University will no longer be liable for any charges from that date the line is released to the user.
  • Depending on when the number is released, partial monthly charges will appear on both the University account as well as on the new consumer account.
