Joining the STC Team
In the spring of every year, OIT interviews students who are interested in becoming STCs for the next academic year. If you are currently a freshman or sophomore, and interested in an STC position for the next academic year, please contact us at stchelp@princeton.edu.
Summary of Position
The Student Technology Consultant position provides technical support to Princeton University students.
STCs are also required to attend one day of training during the week immediately before the beginning of the fall semester. Early arrival is arranged for STCs with the Housing Office.
Principal Duties
Your primary responsibility will be assisting your fellow students with computer questions and problems.
STCs are expected to work weekly shifts in the Tech Clinic, while also being available outside of business hours to rapidly assist fellow students troubleshoot technological issues should problems arise.
This position offers a number of opportunities for advancement and development of specialized skills. Once the initial rush of connection assistance requests slows down in the Fall, STCs are able to spend quality time with individual students or small groups, teaching them how to make the most of technology at Princeton.

Note that specific computer training will be provided, so even if you know very little about computers now, you will be fully equipped to help your fellow students by the time you begin work.
While most problems STCs encounter are straightforward, consultants occasionally run into problems that go beyond their level of expertise. The STC program has experienced STCs and full-time OIT staff as backup to help out with tricky problems.
Special Pressures
During September, STCs may be expected to work more hours than the regular schedule to assist with the volume of requests from new students. This includes being visible and available during move-in weekend. During the rest of the academic year, STCs work 2-4 hours per week. Time management skills are crucial for keeping up with both job-related and academic work during the first six to eight weeks of the fall semester.
Compensation and Benefits
STCs are paid hourly for the time worked.
